What They Say About Fairlynch

What they’ve said about Fairlynch Museum and Arts Centre:

‘I have  a tremendous admiration for the dedication which so many of your Committee and helpers devote to the excellent museum which is such a credit to Budleigh Salterton.’

Eric Delderfield, author,  May 1980

‘The Fairlynch costume collections arise in large part from the private collection of the Misses Gawne and when reviewed for the then Area Museums Council in the 1980s were still largely stored in their own converted space.  As a personal collection they have significance both as a costume life story of two prosperous Devon ladies and as reflections of costume available and traded in a fashionable resort in South Devon.  They have now been brought safely together  - a snap shot of costume history in south Devon’s Big Society!’

Richard de Peyer, Curator, Hertford Museum; former Director, Silk Heritage Trust,  April 2011

‘Many of our guests make lovely comments about Fairlynch Museum.  They think it's really enjoyable and charming.  They like finding out about Budleigh and learning about the history of the local area.’

Brian Drake, proprietor, Long Range Hotel, Budleigh Salterton. April 2011

‘I am proud to be Patron of Fairlynch Museum because it’s such a splendid  example of an institution and its volunteers serving the local community and caring so deeply for Devon’s heritage.’

Gerald Neville Mark Fane-Trefusis, 22nd Baron Clinton, July 2013

‘The best of Budleigh Salterton is on display in Fairlynch.  Local history and local geology sit together in a charming building.  Every time I walk past or go inside, I am reminded of why this town is so special.'

Sue Lawley OBE, broadcaster, May 2011

‘Museums –  and of course some books –  provide an invaluable way of understanding the past and how it relates to our own times.  Fairlynch in its wonderfully quirky fashion makes the journey an enjoyable experience.’

Dame Hilary Mantel DBE, FRSL, author, May 2011

‘A local community needs its local history.  It gives it roots and provides it with an understanding of where it came from and why it matters.  That is why Fairlynch matters to Budleigh Salterton.'

Hugh Williams, historian and local resident, May 2011

‘Fairlynch Museum runs a very good quality operation, of interest to all sorts of people.’

Budleigh Salterton Town Councillor Tom Wright, December 2014
