Our Local History room holds a wealth of information about Budleigh Salterton and the villages of the Lower Otter Valley contained in the files in the study area and on a P.C. containing our digital records. A microfiche reader is available by appointment which holds parish registers for our locality.
Personal assistance is available on Tuesday afternoons.
For our 2019 exhibition we are devoting all the local history space to one topic, 'The Changing Face of the High Street'.
Last exhibited in 1999 many changes have taken place to our shops since then.
We are able to show once again the hand drawn frieze of all the buildings in the High Street, created by Elizabeth Gawne in 1974 and given a new lease of life for this exhibition.
Also back by popular request will be the Myra Pyne tablecloth, dating from the 1980’s containing the embroidered signatures of many well known residents, many of them shopkeepers in the High Street.
To bring this all together we are displaying a collection of paintings to celebrate the life of the late Ken Walker a well known artist of our town. Kindly loaned to us by various shops, owners and Ken’s family.
See the exhibition dedicated to our Railway Station, now closed for 50 years, including rare film footage of the line from Sidmouth Junction to Exmouth.
See the changing aspects of the River Otter.
